Streep fans, I think you're going to enjoy this one. I know I did.

The film, a rehab job on a beached marriage, displays the most tender respect, the most exquisite tact, and yet it would be completely unwatchable -- an outright embarrassment -- with any other actors than Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep.

It's tough to come up with new superlatives for Meryl Streep, but the 63-year-old actress delivers her most frankly sexual performance yet in Hope Springs.

Streep is warm, and she's got the timing of a stand-up. Her performance demands you bat for her woman.

Unlike the cloying contrivances of It's Complicated, Hope Springs is audacious in its commitment to subtle authenticity, never artificially upping the dramatic stakes but instead staying true to its small yet relatable story.

As well-written as it is, with frank analysis of what can make a good marriage lose its spark over time, the film gets its emotional resonance from the heartfelt performances.

This dramedy offers a refreshingly-honest and comedic look at an aging couple still trying to make their relationship work.

As estranged bedfellows, Tommy Lee Jones (he's a little bit Harvard) and Meryl Streep (she's a little bit Yale) make great combatants in a rousing battle of the sexes.

Sure, there's some big, general things about common couples' problems that ring true, but Hope Springs is all posturing with very little believable character building.

Absolutely not the comedy it implies, this mostly serious, very frank story is simplistic, even awkward, but captivates because of the leads.

While it may feel familiar to some, such awkward home truths do not a great viewing experience make. Jones is bereft of charm, while Streep seems misplaced as his loyal wife.

Streep and Jones's acting is probably better than the film's direction and script deserve, but, thanks to them, Hope Springs is tender, sad, funny and honest.

Audience Reviews for Hope Springs

"Hope Springs" could've been a pretty insightful film about the realities that set in after being married for a very very long time. Instead "Hope" opts to be a enjoyable piece of fluff anchored by two masterful performances by the always great Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones.

Nice. Enjoyable. Touching. Not to be viewed as a Romantic Comedy, is a drama, with maybe 1 or 2 minor chuckles. I found it very true to life. Meryl Streep, and Tommy Lee Jones, did a completely believable job.

An honest and emotional film about the ups and downs of marriage bolstered by incredible performances from Streep and Jones. This is a serious movie with very little comedy, unlike the trailers suggest, but there's still enough funny moments to not make it a completely depressing experience for a majority of the movie. If there's any flaws, it is certainly the annoying music at some points that just shouts the emotions you should be feeling, as well as a little too tidy of an ending for what the characters go through throughout the film. It's still a very good film though and one of the few serious films about relationships. It's nice to have a romantic movie that doesn't pander to the audience.

Having not been a fan of many Meryl Streep films, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed her performance in this film and her on-screen chemistry with Tommy Lee Jones is very nice to watch. Everything about this film feels just right and Steve Carell is perfectly cast as there marriage/sex therapist. Most of this film takes place in a single room, where conversations and characters pasts are what drive the film. This is very well-produced and the atmosphere fits the film in the best way possible. Meryl Streep definitely deserves her Golden Globe nod, but I'm upset that Tommy Lee Jones didn't get chosen. "Hope Springs" is a very sweet movie that will have you crying, laughing, and smiling throughout. A very solid film!

    1. Kay: You know, how you think you're always headed toward something? You think "when we get married" or "when we have kids" or "when the kids go and it's just us again." You know, there's always something to look forward to. And one day, I realized that we are not going toward anything anymore.
